Well, you could also consider that this band's music is generally associated with happiness, and The National's is more catered to depression. Maybe there is a time and place for both. #harmony #balance #whossaxophoneisthis

The National are the embodiment of what it's like to be down in the dumps in your late 20s. They hit the nail on the head. If you don't 'get' it then fair fucks to you but wait till your a bit older they'll blow your mind.......unlike this media savy codswollop.

Are people really comparing the National to Animal Collective right now? They're so vastly different.

And Zakalwe, I'm in my late 20s and they still put me to sleep. This album rules hard.

In terms of the new fangled, overhyped, art school, lsd induced, backwards, bandwidth culture bullshit that took over from 2000 onwards.

I'd say AC before this album in terms of being hip were equivalent to early Mercury Rev and with this album are more the level of latter day Flaming Lips. If that makes them poseurs then fair cop I guess

I'd say in terms of spirit early Mercury Rev are a close comparison to AC - blue and black off yerself is steam could be an AC tune

@zak I love Nathan Barley, and the closest Animal Collective ever came to the post-2000s culture that show deals with is Centipede Hz, albeit very consciously.

This album has so much about it that distinguishes it from modern alt/indie culture, the fact you consider this album to be symptomatic of it is startling.

They have never been a band that have chased trends, they've chased aesthetics. All of this 'ultimate hipster band' shit that people try to plaster over AnCo has never really reflected their sound or their artistic intent. As has been previously suggested, you really must be getting them confused with MGMT.
