I went out of my way to obtain this via other avenues and NOW it's on streaming, typical
still, maybe this is the catalyst for another dip and that can only be a good thing

The Antique and the way the album builds towards that finale is impressive for sure. The Manifold Curiosity is rather satisfying. Then you have Wayfarer in-between which is… hmm yes, not great actually. Shame.
I feel like this is close to being something special, but I’m also not totally in love with the guitar tone in those (comparatively) quieter moments. It’s fine when they go for the jugular because it does sound huuuuuuge. Idk sounds a bit thin otherwise, so I much prefer the jazzy segments when it quietens. Maybe it’s purposefully done due to the way it’s layered etc, not sure

the last 6 or so minutes of the antique are some of the most beautiful minutes in music

Loooove how the tones frame this as brittle and tactile when it's down and then go full behemoth when they crunch, so much more subtlety and contour here than practically anything else post rock or metal adjacent (though Dowsing takes that quality further imo). Driver's ear for timbre is insane on those early records, you can tell he learnt all the right lessons from Talk Talk

Yeah, I don’t hear it as fragility or brittleness necessarily in those moments. I can stretch my mind around that idea perhaps, yet still not sure it’s a sound I enjoy. It’s definitely dynamic, I don’t have any issue with that. The pacing is fine and the structure is interesting. Maybe this just hasn’t hit me in that right moment, but I’ve tried many times to pass beyond the sheer ‘respect’ and appreciation stage and into unobstructed enjoyment
I love that this exists, I really do

I love post metal, Talk Talk, mOTW etc. and although I don’t exactly have a great understanding of jazz, I do enjoy a fair amount of the classics
Idk this should hit harder, still trying to pinpoint exactly why but think I may have touched upon something relevant here

A while yes… years? Maybe. It’s happened before. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy this but if someone provided me with an accurate picture of its individual parts, I’d be expecting huge things. Especially now actually. I probably wasn’t ready the first time.
