I’d say Guns n Roses, Aerosmith, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Metallica and uh, Motley Crue, were all huge at my school before Nirvana landed
Then those bands were mostly brushed aside for a total influx of new stuff that sounded absolutely nothing like the aforementioned bands following ‘Nevermind’
