I feel like Porcupine Tree would've sounded like this if they had continued, given how The Incident sounded in places.

@Titan: This is his most interesting for me. Grace is also great and on par with this. The other two I don't revisit often, especially his latest one

From a purely musical standpoint, Grace probably contains his most interesting ventures, period. But there's very few albums that resonate with me on an emotional level as much as HCE.

HCE is probably my least listened to SW album from all of his projects. Will give it another shot later, but it just doesn't have the same character as his first 2 solo albums

I don't know, I personally enjoy the first two and latest two - and listen to them - in fundamentally different ways. The quality of Insurgentes/Grace lies in their musical innovation and exploration, which spawned many brilliant moments. But they were never as satisfying as whole pieces as were The Raven and HCE.

Raven is more cohesive than this or Drowning but they're all close in quality. HCE is definitely Wilson's best since Storm Corrosion or FOABP.

I loved Storm Corrosion and hope they make more, but understand that it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. It's not even a prog record, but that's part of why I like it so much, and admire them for not just doing what would be expected from them musically.

"It's not even a prog record"

I think there is actually something very "progressive" to Storm Corrosion, especially in their compositional approach. It was certainly not a progressive rock record, but I think Storm Corrosion directly follows the traditional path of progressive music to attempt to break away from conventional song structures and stylistic boundaries.

Yeah by that definition it's certainly progressive, I just meant it wasn't progressive rock or metal the way their fanbase was expecting.

Storm Corrosion was great. I was hoping for it to be even more twisted and Scott Walker like. Still a great album

You seem to tie Insurgentes with GFD, but in my mind, Grace goes with Raven. Insurgentes has always been the awkward relative in his discography, for me. Not bad, at all, just mismatching, maybe because of the great blend of styles it incorporates. Emotionally, the albums are on a continuum. The amount of sentiment is analogous to the time of the release.
