Intro is kind of pretentious and not really true at all.

Pop music, in its current shape, has evolved drastically since the turn of the century, in particular for females. It’s simply just not about the Britneys and Christinas anymore- a quick glance at any of the chart-busting ladies this year alone reflects just how wide the spectrum of pop music can be.

Only Christina's last album sold almost four million albums and did really well on the charts. Even Spears' Blackout sold over 3 million.
You have your big-voice pop divas (Leona Lewis)

Mariah Carey
guitar girls (Katy Perry)

Fiona Apple, Alannis Morrisette. And Katy Perry is hardly a "guitar girl".
stylish urban girls (Jordin Sparks)

What the fuck does this even mean?
sweet singer-songwriters (Sara Bareilles)

Dido, Jewel.
ladies that are part of the “neo-soul” movement (Duffy)

Erykah Badu, Macy Gray, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys. Also calling Duffy "neo-soul" is probably a stretch.

Dude? I think you've just misread what I'm writing about.

Also, my bad- "It’s simply just not about the Britneys and Christinas anymore" is supposed to read "not just"; I wasn't discarding them at all.

You said evolved drastically, then went on to imply that pop music is now more than the Britney's and Christina's, which of course leads me to infer that you mean it was once only about that. Also kind of weird that you sort of imply that pop music is only about broads.

I do? Not really what I was trying to get across at all. Just discussing pop music in terms of females in recent times.

Meanwhile, “Ave Maria” borrows far too much from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (vocal melodies, arpeggios and time signature to name a few) to give the song any firm identity on its own

Just listened to the song on youtube out of curiosity (thought she had actually attempted to cover the Schubert/Pavarotti version) and if anything, it sounds more like the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah rather than Leonard Cohen, but even that is a bit of a stretch. The only part that sounds similar to the original Cohen version is when he actually sings 'Hallelujah' in comparison to when Beyonce sings 'Ave Maria', but the Ave Maria part is directly lifted from the original Ave Maria, so going on to say it borrows from Leonard Cohen would be wrong anyway.

but otherwise I liked the review! This Message Edited On 11.30.08

Thankyou Kirgasm!

Honestly, all I could think of when I heard the song was "Hallelujah", so I felt like I had to mention it. Also, I don't believe I've ever heard the original Ave Maria.

To be honest, I never really set out to cause trouble or anything. I guess I just got a bit ridiculous and out of hand.

The community still despises me, and I'll never be even a contributor at this rate. But I still write, incessantly. And here's a good place to get it out.

I don't see how the "community" despises you nor do I see how that matters. Just do your thing and don't take anything other than criticism of your work to heart.

good review man

this line made it for me

"Beyonce’s inner diva, belting out those quasi-poignant r-&-b ballads as if her proverbial ‘phat cash’ were about to disappear" Hit the nail on the head.

also, i might just do Hourly, Daily this week ;D

It matters because both Jom and Dave seem to hate me and won't let me proceed further no matter how much writing I do and how many people like it.

also because i dont write like this in all my posts with stupid "quirky" humourThis Message Edited On 11.30.08

I find Beyonce really really tedious. No surprise there, but nice review, if a little too long to keep my interest all the way through.
