I am a huge fan of Metallica, but only of their early work. Every album from Kill Em All - The Black Album IMO is great. After that Metallica changed their sound to something that I wouldn't even consider metal, just hard rock. In the 90's Metallica started to fade and by the time St. Anger was released it seemed all hope was lost for one of the greatest thrash metal bands to come out of the 80's. When I heard Death Magnetic would be a return to their roots I didn't know if I could believe it. After listening to it now it's safe for me to say they've shown a fine return to form. Almost every song is an in-your-face showing that they have returned. Metallcia is a force again and I hope they keep it up. The only song I think that sounds out of place is The Unforgiven III. Every other song makes me think of old-school Metallica. It's not perfect by any standards but at least Metallica are playing how they play best and I couldn't be happier with this album.

Haven't gotten around to this yet as my priorities are elsewhere but the singles off this were good to great so I sure will check out the rest.

Wait a tick, did he just review St. Anger or this album? Either way, good review, ho hum album. The engineering/Lars make this a tough listen.

Fanboyism is never the answer kids. Just say "No" to knee-jerk reviewing in the first month of an album's release. Time will tell. This Message Edited On 09.15.08

Suicide & Redemption is an insult to their instrumentals. Seriously, I have no idea wtf they were trying to do with it. Otherwise it's a fairly decent album.

^^ I agree. It's a complete departure from their old instrumental style. One of the riffs in it sounds like Motley Crue...
The rest of the album is excellent though.

The more I hear this album, the more frustrated I get. And considering I didn't care for it the first time, this is a problem.
I'm almost shocked that so many people like this...

The way I see it, if this album was made 2 years after The Black Album instead of Load, it would have been seen as another classic. So pretty much this is the album Metallica should have made.

There we are. Much better.

And if anyone else had written Load, it would have won a Grammy. Still, I hear this, and all it sounds like is a group that wants badly to be Metallica, but are in fact, horribly mediocre. Maybe worse. It's not just that James' vocals are not good. They're terrible. Kirk's solos were something of a disappointment. Didn't expect much from Lars, and naturally, he didn't really deliver. The only thing that impressed me was Rob's bass work.
