"That may be it in a way... that one is "YOUR" Metallica album--i.e. the one that first turned you onto them and felt a connection to as a kid. With me it was AJfA, and the first exposure and resonance is a powerful thing."
Not sure how my position would be explained then. I discovered Death Magnetic when I was in college, but that was after I already fell in love with the band's first 4 records. DM made me feel like I was right at home after a string of disappointments, returning to the complex compositions and aggressive riffs of their classic era
Y'know, I might have to review this someday. I know there's already a shit-ton of writeups for it, but it would be cool to provide a really in-depth 4+/5 review of this to explain just why there are so many positive appraisals of the album to this day (and of course, to play devil's advocate against the extremely negative ones)

Your position is exactly the same as mine. DM felt like a return to form, but if the Load era was your first exposure, it's more likely you wouldn't dig, I reckon.

Never really had any particular dislike for this one honestly. It's looong but they did try. Plus the iTunes remaster is even listenable! (a rather surreal sentence to type)

@eg: you need to realize that I was listening to this since I was 17, and now I’m 27 lol. So 40 listens isn’t THAT crazy

OK fair. In my mind this was max 5 years old.
