there are / were way worse people in black metal than jon who are still accepted so that aint it

songwriting is way less mobile, less grit, drums (both writing and performance) are weak, dense guitar harmonies bear little relation to anything else in the arrangement (plus they're a bit homogenous (but this is ok bc they're good))

well you are probably the only person to have ever made the case that dissection is gritty and this somehow isnt

somberlain and thorns of crimson death are eternal bangers tho

eh helping someone commit homophobic murder is pretty high on the list of shitty things bm artists have done

also while i get the obvious parallels with dissection, the colour of these riffs feels totally different to me. sounds more like Oracle Moon than anything else i can think of rn

also what in the fuck at the drum performance being weak, are you daft?

dissection's tones, vocals and (admittedly less imaginative) diminished fixations are all grittier than anything on this

tbh i don't think this is a remotely gritty album and it was unfair to bring that into the comparison; not the same level of intensity though

probably more of a metal person vs non metal person difference in perception

unanimated debut is worth checking btw

am sure dissection would sound a whole lot less intense to me if i invested in jamming bm on the reg, but this is practically comfort music compared to sotlb. not that that matters

the drums kinda irritated me at points though (Beyond All Horizons def), you get the impression that their guy is switching gears at whim and no-one else in the band is paying him the slightest attention. as for the performance, it's not technical enough to be particularly impressive and it doesn't have a shred of personality or dynamism imo. might as well have programmed the whole thing

cheers park will try to check

woa perhaps

gonna give this another try later. i don't mind approaching it as a meandery riff fest, just felt like hella false advertising to come into it off the back of comparisons with a band with dynamic songwriting and actual chemistry between guitarists and non-guitarists hm

probably mostly the fact that sacramentum and vinterland (and lord belial, and prob others) were among the first meloblack bands and sounded way closer to dissection than to any of the notable non-melo black metal bands
