It had the opposite effect on me I guess, you seemed to like it less with every listen (I swear you had a 5 on this, calling it a progressive metal masterpiece etc) but for me I liked it more every listen. Good review though.

sorry crysis, but you wrote yourself a nice rant.

the intro was just a tad ranty.

No, the intro was not ranty in the least and you need to stop thinking that negative comments/ reviews are ranty. Crysis backed himself up well and has proven to this site that he is more than capable of writing a review that goes against the norm (not that he is spiteful against fanboys or anything).

Very good review, I've had this on my list for a while. This Message Edited On 08.20.08

You're right, I did have this at a 5. I did call it a prog metal masterpiece.

Then time took it's course.

Hey, you can't change you mind Crysis. That's against the rules.

It's not like if I went back and actually re-rated half the things I've already rated that I would lower 90% of them. This Message Edited On 08.20.08

Sometimes an album has that affect on you. Look what happened to Watershed with me for example (only I dropped it 0.5 of a rating hahaha).

I was just saying how this album had an opposite effect on me, I didn't say you can't change your opinion after a while.

...I was joking. If I DID go back and rate half my stuff again, 90% of my ratings would lower.

I disagree with your second paragraph completely

Yeah, it makes it seem like you simply listened to this too many times to really care about it anymore, rather than it actually wears off after time. I've spun this at least 20 times and for the most part it got better with each listen.

Agree with AngelPhoenix, you seem to have just listened to this way too much and got bored rather than this actually being bad. That being said, if an album gets boring then it's not that amazing anyway.

I hear that too, but I believe that even the greatest of albums, ones that none, or at least very few people would argue against them being anything short of amazing if not classic, can become boring if played overmuch.

I'm not even suggesting that that's exactly what happened to Crysis, just that the review makes it seem that way.

All that being said, a 3.5 isn't a bad score by any means, but I think it much more reflects a jaded standpoint that a true reflection of the overall quality present here.

I've probably listened to this album somewhere in the vicinity of 10-20 times.

Right, but your cut-off might be different than mine, and for different albums or styles of metal.

Anyway, the whole point is that a review is, in the end, one's opinion, and you've stated yours well, I'm not saying otherwise. I just feel the need to voice my disagreement on an album I like so much.

Interesting perspective, I'm very late to the party here but I've listened to the album a couple times today. I like it, but I've been getting excited about a lot of stuff lately that I end up finding bland, so I'm just going to give this one time. It's probably going to be a 4.0 from me though... maybe it's because I'm not an Opeth fan-boy, I don't know. I saw Opeth live last year and they really turned me off. I got the impression from them directly the same impression their fan-boys give me. It was like Akerfeldt was standing there thinking "I'm such a god of music, and I do it with such finesse, could I get any more awesome?" I don't know... maybe he's earned that. I'll stick with Orphaned Land... their fans aren't too pretentious yet.

Took me a while but I'm starting to see your point. "Fall" is probably the best track on the album. The good drastically outweighs the bad here, but it isn't a masterpiece as I first felt. Probably will make it in to my top 100 albums list though for the moments of excellence.
