there was a time when music critics could actually make or break careers, and there were entire scenes that either sprung up or dissolved on that basis. to say that the prevalence of the internet changed things drastically is probably an understatement
instead of maybe a couple dozen omnipresent critical voices calling the shots (not counting the many random zines but whatever) we now have like, idk, an ocean of millions of fans whose opinions can be readily accessed, but bear in mind that it indeed used to be the way zak is describing. I mean, guys like fantano still exist but nonetheless

I’m not denying the importance of the music press or how it’s changed with time but it seems a little silly to remember something one guy said about a band like a decade ago and judge the band based on it today
Plus we all know if these guys were British Zak would slap a 4 on it minimum

well I’m p sure he’s just reminiscing and criticizing the early hype the band had and what he considers wasted potential. the comment he’s referring to probably isn’t the point but I guess he can speak for himself so

A bit of balance. Good lad.
For the record if these were Brits I’d 2 it.

I think it’s the other way around, The Clash probably get together and play TGA albums and think “fuck, this is what we should have been”

And at what point have I judged the band on the one comment? My opinion of the band is based on their lack of punch and urgency. I was using the clash reference to opine how ridiculous it is.

I’m not claiming you based your entire opinion of the band on that one comment

definitely seemed like the overblown comparisons were a factor in your distaste for the band, given that you remembered them from so long ago, and I actually can’t fault you entirely for that because it is natural to be skeptical of things when they’re overhyped now that I think about it. But maybe that isn’t a factor
These guys > The Clash though we can at least agree on that right?

Better than the Clash? Not a lot is.
A discog containing one of the greatest debuts, one of the greatest albums and more unbelievable songs than about 92% of everyone else. Some absolute shite as well but it’s inevitable.

I didn’t know they had albums I thought they just dropped Should I Stay Or Should I Go and dipped

a big part of gaslight anthems style (Springsteen comparisons aside) is .. well, anthems I guess, but imo a lot of their stuff just doesn’t cut to the core of that whereas Clash’ early material is characterized by that and probably pioneered anthemic punk. so that “the next clash” comment gripe actually is warranted and maybe worth exploring somewhat 🤷🏻♂️ 🔫

Oh I’m not saying Zak is wrong for being critical of that comment, I am too. I don’t even think the Springsteen comparisons are really valid, let alone The Clash

I just don’t really understand why it matters what the press says/said cause I’m a zoomer and shit

well it gave them a preemptive credibility that some might argue wasn’t warranted in hindsight

The Clash comparison from one guy boosted their credibility? I googled “Gaslight Anthem The Clash” and no comparisons come up. It’s not a common comparison people make so I really doubt it did anything for their credibility as a whole
