Point to some specifics, then. That's what I've been waiting for. This Message Edited On 08.12.08

Amen. I can't stand reviews like this, not only because they appeal to about one person but also because they lack substance, descriptive content etc. I mean, I haven't even heard anything from these guys and I still think this review sucks ass. I couldn't care less for some guys opinion, I can care for a good review.

No, that isn't how you do good reviews. They are supposed to have more objective material than subjective, even though listening to an album is a different experience for every single person. This review is about 5% objective, poorly argued, etc.
Your first posts were pretty terrible, but you at least explained yourself better here. This Message Edited On 08.12.08

joshuatree: Eh.... I was just responding earlier, not making overarching statements like I sort of did there.
serpento: This was probably the most offensive line in the review:
"Such an odd, stiff shift is almost jarring to the listener (which is good in a way, since they’ve probably fallen asleep by now.)"
and also,
"Tracks unnaturally bounce between moods, which would be perfectly fine had the album any façade of flow. Unfortunately, peppering half-upbeat songs like Say Hello to the Angels and Obstacle 1 amongst the more prevalent, subdued sound doesn’t work all that well."
"Almost every sound is abnormally soft at times, except one particular instrument that seems to fluctuate every few seconds. Vocals drown in fuzziness, which only adds to their droning nature (at least it tends to buffer the rise-and-fall style.)"
Right there, man. Just try to be more objective (not to the point of being a faceless, stuffy "professional reviewer" though) when you review albums. Also, you don't talk about the melodies or lyrics at all, which are a major focus of this album and make or break many albums out there. You also don't seem to appreciate the direction Interpol's music goes towards. It's like if someone were to decide they didn't like the aesthetics of the Seattle grunge scene and then write off any grunge albums they hear. Even if the album is shit, they still should be able to go in whatever artistic direction they want without you putting them down just for that.

Yes, a band can go out with an idea however big or small, record their odds and bodkins, and accomplish their goal. That doesn't automatically entail good music (see: Alchemy Index I/II, No World for Tomorrow, News of the World.) I can appreciate what Interpol tried to do (like ec said he's been shoving it on me for years,) but also not particularly see it as overarching and spectacular. Like I said, to me it's just sleepy music. Concerning a) the melodies, I figured song structure would blanket that (I guess I'll go in and edit/elaborate) b) the lyrics, I honestly had no concrete say on them and chose to overlook them. Finally, I don't see how describing how the music sounds is overly subjective.
I'll give you that one quip was dumb, though.

You didn't really describe how it sounds, though. You just described how it felt. Like sonically, what is going on? If you say, like "Almost every sound is abnormally soft at times, except one particular instrument that seems to fluctuate every few seconds," that isn't a good enough description. Here is probably the best description I've seen of this album:

It is a positive review, but not from a guy who just throws around positive reviews all the time.
But I mean, I got the impression the 2 rating was so low because you

Shame on you Serpento, you put your own opinion in your review. TISK TISK!!!

LOL
just stick to sounding off if all you've got for a review is your personal opinion....that should be the rule
|
| |
I could be mistaken but aren't reviews the reviewers thoughts on the album?
|
| |
no way, he you have to give an air of objectivity so mikem1234 will take your reviews seriously. that's how it's done.

Killed4Less: Nope, if it's just that, its useless. Unless that person has really really good taste in music. It needs more in it.
myrrhman: Exactly, and then you win at life :D Nah man, its not all about that objectivity shit, its just more about it than many sputnik reviewers believe it is.
If all a review says is "this album made me feel x," and that is the basis for a pos or neg review, then the review should get negged.

So you should only give a dry, unbiased synopsis of the music alone?

You lack credibility here. You're subjecting your opinion, and trying to object it in a review. It fails badly. So what you personally didn't like it. That's probably not going to make much difference to the reader who wants to get a bit of know-how.
