Review Summary: Metalcore with melodic elements that will make you cry while you headbang.

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard, and one of my first. Demon Hunter’s personal best and metalcore that doesn’t suck, The Triptych is a force to be reckoned with.

Opening with The Flame That Guides Us Home, a short choral track that abruptly vanishes into Not I, a brutal song that may be Demon Hunter’s best. The guitars are like dropping a chunk of downtuned bass into a blender and hitting the Annihilate button. The vocals are thick and vicious, and the chorus is only semi-melodic, with creepy droning moans about nonconformity. Not I is a ferocious introduction to Demon Hunter post-Summer of Darkness, and they’re aiming to improve.

Undying is the first single and follows more faithfully to the melody portion, with a sung almost churchy chorus about eternal life. The rest of the song is a hardcore tribute to refusing to die with hulking growls. The breakdown is actually very good (and long). Surprising, since metalcore breakdowns are notoriously awful.

Relentless Intolerance is a great song. The chorus tosses back and forth from the screams and singings of vocalist Ryan Clark. The verses actually seem to “spiral down” into the chorus, like drowning a demon in holy water and having it emerge as an angel, but have its bestial side still churn within.

Are we going to see a trend of you releasing 5/5 reviews for anything Christian and remotely heavy?

you actually described this album better than the BTA one and this is a tbt. this isn't a 5 though; the only thing that sets DH apart from generic metalcore is ryan's awesome vocals.

This album has some cool tracks but certaintly no more than a 3- 3.5. The Tide Began To Rise is spectacular however.

Never heard this album, but this band is horrible. Heard one of their albums. I forget which one. And I think two reviews in one day is good enough.

^ What Balls said. I would have given this a 5 back when I adored the band and thought they were unique, but like Rizzo said Ryan's vocals (and the fact + how well DH does ballads) are the only things that set them apart.

The album isn't groundbreaking, unique, timeless or even perfect. Not even close to a 5.

Demon Hunter is one of my favorite bands, hands down. But as much as I like them, I can't say that this album is a perfect 5. There are definitely some classic songs on here ("Undying," for some reason, stands out as my favorite), but it's not enough to put it in the upper echelons of music. I think this is DH's best album though, even though it's not my personal favorite.

One more thing: correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost certain "Undying" is a song about those who will be spared from the rapture...This Message Edited On 07.31.08

^ Nah, Undying is about eternal life. Listen to the chorus.

I was thinking about the bridge:

"We are the ones who will still remain when all is laid to waste; we are the ones who, when angels cry, will see them face to face"

Well...I suppose they're the same thing, aren't they? Those who will be spared from the rapture are the ones who will have everlasting life, right? This Message Edited On 07.31.08

Summer of Darkness and S/t shit all over this. This CD brings the zzz's big time. The only song that stands out to me is Not I, because it truly is fucking kickass.

Summer of Darkness is crammed with filler and this is still better than the S/T actually.

Nah, this is easily the least inspired of the CD's i've heard from them (still haven't gotten around to StGoH yet). Songs like Deteriorate, Relentless Intolerance and the Fire to My Soul add nothing to this CD and should have never made the cut.

Whatever. 7 of the 12 songs on SOD range from weak to filler. I explained why this is their best in my review, so I'll just let whoever cares to read that.
