So many people write this record off but they fail to realize that without Euronymous' influence there would be no present day Black Metal. I love this album in all of its dark, violent and brooding splendor. Classic BM.

I used to think this album was pretty bad, but it has definitely grown on me. I agree, this is classic black metal.

Who knows, black metal might have been much better without his influence. And I think you guys give him wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much credit. Album is still mediocre.

I dont give him that much credit. I agree he was influential, but the black metal scene couldve survived without him, and it did. He was obviously a pretty big jack off if he planned to torture Varg and videotape it.

Euronymous was charismatic and convinced other bands in the scene to stop playing Death Metal and take up the Black Metal torch i.e. Immortal, Darkthrone. There could have been modern day Black Metal without him but it probably wouldn't sound anything like Leviathan or Marduk.

Yeah, except for the fact that second-wave black metal might have never even happened if it wasn't for him. You're oblivious if you think that black metal would be better now without his influence.
Whether or not you like this album, pretty much every song on this album contains some classic riffs that define the genre and every song on here is covered by tons of black metal bands to this day. To say he had little influence on black metal is ridiculous.

This is Mayhem's best and a black metal classic. Even if you don't like it, you must respect what it contributed to the genre.

This is why I phrased my last comment in question form. And I never said that I gave him little credit, I just think you discount the other bands around at this time.
Zoo,
I do respect it, I just think its bottom of the list in terms of classic black metal.

I just realized that in the review you claim that the track "Funeral Fog" starts off with blast beats. It's just Hellhammer playing really, really fast. They're not blast beats.

surprisingly... I really like it. When I think about it from a different perspective, the album does exactly what it sets out to do. The vocals IMO are what make it what it is. They add so much atmosphere and give me the sense that someone is standing behind me with a knife O.o

I find this to be a tad overrated. It's classic in the whole "history of black metal" thing but it is objectively no more than a very good black metal record. Freezing Moon is great, though.
