As much as I like Hellhammer's drumming he is a douchebag. He didn't even try to hide his racist attitudes behind an ethno-nationalist type of view. Also apparently he applauded Faust for "killing a faggot". A freaking nutcase of a man
I met someone who knows him in 2011 and he told me he is a very weird guy and drinks a lot. I hope he has changed cause I think he had a lot of issues...

Is he really that great? I mean it sounds impressive at first, but it’s the same grind going in for 50 minutes. Like he does one thing good and that’s it. I guess that’s a genre requirement here, but pretty one dimensional. Or maybe my ears are just not sensitive to the nuances?

I don't think he's the most technically sound nor are his chops the best. If we're talking black metal drummers I'd put a few guys over him like barker, dominator, etc but I think his playing is a little more varied than most bm drummers. I like his grooves and hi-hat/ride work when he's not just blasting

Life eternal here is a pretty good example of how he can be more interesting than a lot of metal drummers i think, but his later mayhem stuff is more impressive than anything on this album although this is a much rawer production

this album also has one of the most satisfying drum sounds ive heard in my life, i used to take it for granted when i was younger but damn it really sounds amazing

OK, the drumming in Illuminate Eliminate is really cool, and it's true there's also more variety in Life Eternal. Will need to check other than De Mysteriis if I want to become more intimate with Mayhem.
I read an interview with Csihar the other day, it was funny how he describes arriving for the first time to Oslo via train in the early 90s and being uncertain how he'd recognize any of the band members. But upon arrival there was a guy (Varg) at the station wearing a chainmail shirt and a sword, not your ordinary Norwegian manager lol.

Hellhammer is top 3 drummer in extreme metal history agreed. Barker is my tops though. His work on early Cradle and Dimmu is unbeatable for me.
