Soundgarden? AiC?
The only similarity to other bands I've seen is Pantera's guitar tone, which they admitted they ripped off.

Jesus christ no! Dime's guitar tone is like the polar opposite of Ty's. IIRC Dime admitted to being inspired by King's X for the open string picking clean parts of Cemetary Gates. You can hear it in Summerland.

@Parallels: to quote Rex Brown regarding King's X's first album:
"Dime called me and said, ‘Dude, have you heard this? Have you checked out King’s X?'” he says. “We went on a long road trip, and we must have listened to that first record I don’t know how many times. And we couldn’t stop. … This was the sound that Dime and I were always looking for.”
So if anything, it's the other way around

That's what I meant. Pantera was heavily inspired by King's X guitar tone.
@sitar I can hear OotSP's guitar tones quite clearly in Cowboys from Hell.

I dunno man, Dime's tone started the scooped mids craze while Ty's early tone is heavy on the mids. Nearly completely opposite to my ear.

Ha! That's why I love them. They're like the upbeat AiC which is why I fell in love with them.

They’re like AIC if you added gospel and prog to their sound

AiC had bits of prog already I think.

They actually remind me of Clutch a little bit, minus the New Orleans twist

Or you could say AIC is like King's X without gospel and prog but more doom metal :]

^ Yeah true, especially since King's X came first

Just started listening to this and right during the opening track I was like "this is proggy Alice In Chains" and "Alice In Chains wasn't as original as I thought..."

Yeah, King's X's influence is far-reaching in general. Devin Townsend even included this as one of the five albums that shaped him as a musician
