I think it's more of a dynamics problem with PC. All these songs are very chilled out, you know? The real peaks are MA, SU and the closer imo, but overall it's all very much the same vibe. I mean, there is little dynamics between the songs, if that makes sense. The production is very dynamic of course.
Otherwise I think PC is just a little less passionate and Sorceress is the least passionate record of theirs. That just how I feel about it though.

Agreed man, that may very well be it.

I just personally found Heritage to be full of vigor and unique personality, whereas the following two seemed lifeless and uninteresting in comparison. Sounded like they were going through the motions, maybe the band is still passionate about what they’re doing, it just didn’t come across very well in their more recent efforts.

sorceress is just a fun record. it doesn't have the melancholy hanging over it like most of their other records. at least in terms of sound and songwriting. lyrically it's a different story.

It is not up for discussion that Coil and Burden are average Opeth songs. And that makes them better than anything in the prog trilogy.
This is just science.

if that were true it would mean hessian peel and hex omega are average/below average opeth songs

Coil was so misleading when I listened to this tbh

It just messes with your head, you think you're getting another Damnation but then it fucks you raw with the heaviness of a song like "Heir Apparent" and you realize you're not getting another one like that.

Pure awesome m/ I always likes this kind of opening

Yeah very cool! Just like the first few seconds of Ghost Of Perdition. Mike reportedly did this on purpose, since the first record after Damnation of course was quite a thing.

I gotta bump this up too. Didn't realize just how brilliant songs like Porcelain Heart and Hessian Peel were.

Is it me, or by this point, opeth was becoming an alternative metal band? because I'd approve it.

It's you, guess. This was more like a transition towards quirky prog territory

Unfortunately the quirkinesses only lasted as far as Heritage before genericism set in.
