Host is the best album Depeche Mode never released.

Dunno about that but it's better than this.

to be clear I'm not saying Host is better than anything Depeche Mode released
but as far as soundalikes go it would've made a pretty good Depeche Mode album

~4:35 into Crying for Eternity is SO good, sounds like walking through a cathedral made of doom metal.
Occasional clunkiness and all but this is still a contender for their best imo (though I'm not as fixed on it anymore). Guitars salad, clear bass presence, songs feel like little journeys, plus Holmes is at this best I'd say, harsh but very "human", very "gothic horror-y" you could say.
And yeah band has no duds [2]

This is finally clicking on me after so many years.
Songs like Crying for Eternity, Daylight Torn and Word Made Flesh are starting to make some sense.
