"Illuminatus" especially is a fucking jam, and some of Luc's vocals on The Carnal State seem borderline DSBM territory, haha

I went into this fully expecting nothing to click immediately & yet it was instantly likeable for some reason. And I'm by no means a seasoned DM listener at all. Music is weird sometimes.

I was responding to Deschutes, heard it a few times now, still rules... although I'm not actually sure you were even responding to me, perhaps just commenting at random instead.

For me, I could just hear it was some mindblowing stuff I needed more of in my life - and I think that's what you experienced, demon.
It's not like someone can hum along to this after one listen.

Yeah it was interesting, captivating, intriguing I guess. The general vibe & atmosphere was striking as well, which generally helps when something is so dense.

Cool review! I agree with you, I love "None So Vile" also but I think this does blow it out of the water mainly because this is one of those very rare albums that is not only a great album but is also a genre defying album which to me are the classic albums because of the risk involved by the artists to say "Fuck what's expected of me, I'm going to go the opposite way and try something I've never done before." I don't get how some people were wondering why you would make the comparison between "Obscura" and "None So Vile" I mean isn't it obvious? The comparison was made because they are 2 of the best albums from the same genre and from 2 of the best Canadian death metal bands ever. So to say this blows "None So Vile" out of the water is to say just how great this album really is! I'm going to go buy the re-issued vinyl of this right now cause it's only $23 brand new at my local record shop, I can't wait to hear how it sounds compared to my CD version.

having this on vinyl does sound nice. the guitars and weird musical concepts that are on this are better and more creative than none so vile, but the drums vocals, and lyrics and maybe bass are better on none so vile imo. both are genre defining 5's.

This might be my favorite album that I never feel like listening to.
It's such a specific mood and it's so fucking draining but it's pretty perfect for what it is. Definitely my least listened to album by them.
Colored Sands is best imo but From Wisdom to Hate is close as well

i know exactly what you mean, but over the past 6 years since i joined this site i have slowly made it easier for myself to get in the mood for this album and now i can always jam it because it's perfect, but for years it was hard to be in the mood even though it was always a 5. nostalgia is one of my fav songs. there really is nothing else like this
