Yeah, it only existed to appease the label... wanting them to be typically "nu-metal".

TBH, it was released before I got into them and found it a barrier to entry, if anything. It's not on the WP album I have and don't consider it canon to the release.

Back To School honestly rules... It's such a victory lap. They were so on top at that point that they were like "you want a generic nu-metal track, fine, we'll just crap this out in 5 minutes and it will still be better than 80% of the competition"

Art I get what you’re saying, and yes it’s better than anything dogshit rock rap groups like Limp Bizkit put out… but that song still fucking sucks.



Even worse is if we make it the opener of the album, like many pressings of this record do, it basically bastardizes Pink Maggit, which is literally one of the best songs they ever wrote.



Idk I think we should just leave well enough alone with this masterpiece of a record and think of that song as some weird b side single recorded around the same time, similar to something like Yellow Ledbetter or these “new” Linkin Park tracks that were recorded 25 years ago.

I'm completely biased because my pressing had it as the opening track, so I just got used to it. I know it's a bastardized Pink Maggit, but honestly... they make really nice bookends to the album. "Back in school we are the leaders" actually hits harder on Pink Maggit because of that.



I realize Back In School is kind of a silly track anyway but it hits cause I grew up with it

Oh I totally get it man. I didn’t really grow up listening to Deftones. I knew Change, and that was about it. I didn’t get into them at all until I saw them open for Avenged Sevenfold like 10 years ago.

That's true actually... as I said, the copy I own doesn't have 'Back to School' on it (which makes it a better album), but when I first heard the closer I was like: "Ahhhhh, that's awesome!"
