'That line in 4st 7lb about not wanting to leave a footprint hits differently when you’re wasted at 1am, I’ll say that much'

didn't notice this before, but yeah... I know. That song is absolutely crushing.

honestly this is a 5/5, I just can't bring myself to listen to it now and even if I could, then what? I feel like any impact it could have on me now, might serve to dilute it's legacy somehow. My head-space is different (fortunately), it just wouldn't compare. That might sound odd.

I understand what you mean. For me though, it was so important to me during some of my lowest points that I couldn’t ever imagine giving it anything below a 5. Just means too much to me, honestly

As a side note, I really wish I discovered MSP so much earlier. I only really started exploring their discog back in 2018

I can say with some certainty that none of their post-Richey material holds up particularly well for me. But yeah, this is an eternal 5 and Gold Against the Soul is probably underrated. The debut has it's moments but is waaaaaay too long.

Journal for Plague Lovers is more than decent actually, probably for obvious reasons. Without Richey this band just doesn't really do it for me anymore. Like I said though it's been ages since I even so much as glanced at this one, so who knows?

They were literally my favourite band a couple of decades back... wow it really is that long give or take a year or so, damn!

grew up listening to the Manics and I respect everything up to Know Your Enemy anyway; Hearing So Why So Sad after getting into them cos of Faster is a lot like hearing Beachland Ballroom after getting into Idles cos of Samaritans, or whatever, they had range and JDB is just a good songwriter. but there's a certain point after that song where a switch flips and they're just interested in writing arena bangers and none of them are ever convincing again to me

this is my fave by them cos it's hard to avoid but second is probably This is My Truth

Can’t say I agree with some of the post-Richey stuff not holding up, at least in the case of albums like EMG and JfPL. The former, in particular, strikes me as the cathartic album they needed to make after such a draining and intense record like Holy Bible (and Richey’s subsequent disappearance of course)

Yeah I used to love it man, probably a change in taste or just simply over-listening put pay to EMG in the end. JfPL I mentioned and actually uses a lot of Richey's lyrics, hence giving it a different vibe. They also attempted to bring back some of their previous darker edge, presumably for that reason.

This is a lyrical masterpiece. Need I say more. 4st 7lb is one of the most harrowing listening experiences, ever.

Guts me I'm finally going to see them supporting The Killers, but I know none of these songs will be touched.

This is just a masterpiece in general. Special shoutout to James and Sean for being able to put Richey and Nicky's words into music as phenomenally as they did

Gotta agree with Fog on that one. The cover is just as uncomfortable and revealing as the music itself, so it fits perfectly with the state of mind Richey was in at the time

Whether it's true or not I do see the artwork as a reflection of some of the dark subject matter within, although I think it might be more specific... namely eating disorders - like it's a visual representation of how the sufferer sees themselves. I don't know if it was intentional, perhaps it was just designed to be uncomfortable or provocative idk. Sounds vaguely plausible.

Yeah that's obviously part of it, but there's also an aspect of honesty or reality vs standards, which is often reflected in the lyrics too.
