Great album, but it can't contend with In The Nightside Eclipse.

This sucker is deep and complex - a new listen every time - however - am I the only one who wishes they would go back and remix it so you could actually hear the vocals? they are so back mixed it is ridiculous - it has always bothered me and will always bump this sucker way below Nightside, regardless of the writing on it.



Nightside definitely has more "hooks" on it... this album sounds a bit "washed out" at times...

I found this highly enjoyable.

So do I get this album or In the Nightside Eclipse?

I would say get this, the other is more popular though.

Both are pretty essential if you're just getting into black metal. In the Nightside Eclipse is better though.

Listening to this now. This album is faster, more technical, and has better production than In the Nightside Eclipse while still having the symphonic elements, but the atmosphere on In the Nightside Eclipse, along with Ihsahn's vocals can't be touched and that's what makes it better IMO. This album is still amazing though.
