Not enough great things can be said about Souvlaki, Slowdive's magnificent second album. The sound is incredible -- beautifully written pop songs layered with floating trails of vocals, and vast waves of guitars. The result is a brilliant album, almost on par with Loveless as the definative recordings in the "shoegazer" genre.
The Lineup:
Neil Halstead
Rachel Goswell
Ian McCutcheon
Nick Chaplin
Christian Savill
Simon Scott
Notable Songs
"Alison" (3:51)
"Machine Gun" (4:28)
"When the Sun Hits" (4:47)
"Dagger" (3:33)
"Some Velvet Morning" (3:23)
For most people who aren't familiar with it this special brand of music is pretty incredible, featuring songs with echoing layered voices and swirling, processed guitars. While Slowdive is very melodic sounding, the genre's music can approach the sensation of a droning wall of noise that dominates over the vocal lines buried within it; in all, the sound is unique but a little obscure or dated sounding, as the shoegazer scene only flourished for a few years before being eclipsed by Brit Pop (in England) and Grunge (in America).
Swirly, drifty tunes like "Alison" and "Machine gun" start off the album, and lead into more heart-wrenching songs including my favorite "When the sun hits". Every single song on the album is worth listening to, and theres not a dull spot from start to finish. "Souvlaki" is one of those albums to listen to any time especially on rainy days or when you are having trouble sleeping at night.
Negatives:
A bit dreary
Positives:
Everything Else

Very exceptional album that's up there as one of my favorites. I think the album is so much more though than simply shoegaze. There's an incredible stress placed on great songwriting and meloncholy melody than just trying to make as much noise as possible.
| | | Machine Gun and Souvlaki Space Station are my facorites.
great CD.
| | | Excellent album. "When the Sun Hits" blew me away the first time I heard it.
| | | Hooray for shoegaze reviews. Slowdive is pretty good stuff, man.

I can't say enough about this album... It's so good...
When I first got it, i thought that it sounded a bit dated, and was a tad turned off. After giving it a few proper listenings, i simply can't get slowdive out of my head.
On a side note, am I the only one who desparately wishes they could see these songs performed live? I think that would be an amazing experience.

Dagger is incredible. I think I might like this more than Loveless, but I have to listen to that again.

I've listened to this on and off for the last couple of months, and I've come to the conclusion that this is a beautiful album, worthy of a 4.5. Absolutely gorgeous.
Mine only has ten tracks though

I had to write a sonnet for English class, I wrote about this album, it's called Slowdive.

I don't like Souvlaki Space Station nor When The Sun Hits all that much, but everything else is fantastic. Especially Dagger and Alison.
| | | Just a stunning album, so beautiful.. it might not be the easiest of listens to anyone that hasn't heard much shoegaze for example My Bloody Valentine or Ride, but some songs are just completely stunning on first listen and others will take a few to trully pick up melodies. The songs that stick out for me are probably the most obvious ones, Alison the opener, Machine Gun and my personal fav 'When The Sun Hits' , which is one if not the most beautiful track i've heard and i've heard a few.. that song just sets off emotions and feelings inside thats its difficult to explain. When a song can do that to me, i know i've stumbled across something very special. People will get different feelings out of certain songs...its a very moody album, another highlight is 'Dagger'. This album is great to listen to on your own when your thinking about someone....or even better to share it with them...i promise some of these songs will stay with you for a very long time....enjoy Paul x
