The only one that might be better is Biggie's Ready to Die. All the other rap "classics" aren't classics.

I would put Paid in Full up there but it's not better than Illmatic

Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt for an album that was directly influenced by Illmatic, or Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP for an album that simply did everything better.

Marshall Mathers: too long, too many skits, great but not perfect
Illmatic: Intro, 9 great tracks=all killer no filler

I don't see how it's length could have hurt the album unless you have no attention span.

it's length hurts because it's hard to fill 18 tracks with great music, it's easier to come up with 10 great tracks than 18

So what?

Rubbadonga

so Eminem did not fill his 18 tracks with great music, Nas did with his 10 tracks

So Nas' lesser effort is somehow redeeming?

It's not a lesser effort it was just less songs that means no bad songs which is more than I can say for MMLP

Reasonable Doubt and MMLP are both amazing fucking records. this is just better.

I agree with Rubbadonga. Eminem had 18 tracks on his album. there were not 18 amazing tracks on the album, just 18 tracks.

illmatic is all perfect. eminem has never written a song that betters "Memory Lane" or "It Ain't Hard To Tell."

he's come close though, and I still prefer Eminem as an artist.

OK Illmitch maybe, but erasedcitizen is making it seem like there are MANY albums better than this and that Illmatic is an average album, I don't get that
