Chicken picking is when you play with a pick but still use the free fingers of your picking hand to pluck notes. It's mainly a country music thing, but Mastodon, and Brent in particular, do it a lot, especially when they hit those high drone notes and when they play arpeggiated patterns.
Brent doesn't get nearly enough credit as a virtuoso player, but watching him play countrified rockabilly and blues was a revelation.
