Maybe, it just has the same feel as a double negative to me. All of my music and theory teachers have told me not to use it, and that diminuendo was the technically correct term. But like I said, I was just being a douchebag and I don't really give a shit what word is used, haha.

do you live in australia? if so that's why. it's in the american terminology instead of diminuendo. i mean you can use either, but decrescendo is more widely used in america/canada. i think it has more to do with how widely used they are.
linguistically speaking, decrescendo makes sense, but the italian that is used in musical terminology isn't really looked at in that way anymore if you get what i mean, i.e. decrescendo doesn't mean "get un-louder" which is basically the literal translation, rather it just means "soften"
