Yeah, me to.^ Colors is probably my least favorite BTBAM album. Its obviously good in a technical sense, but I just didnt get as much enjoyment out of this cd as I did their other three original releases. Its overrated as far as Im concerned.

If any of you are familiar with white Walls, then you know the part near the end where it goes into a breakdown. To prove the fluidity of this part, and some other parts in the album, here is Dan from BTBAM.

there's no need to jump in and say anything here, but i thought i should defend the conceptual nature of this part in the album. the rhythm is an obvious variation on the build up before it, which which has the same groove in 13 that happens around the 1:55 mark earlier in the song, and the build up itself is a variation on the rhythm during the 7/8 unision section of ants of the sky around the 2:45 mark. the "breakdown" in white walls is a variation of all this but put in 4/4 and leads back the 5/4 - 4/4 ascending run section; which is a variation of the end of sun of nothing. the whole end of white walls is a big coming together of the whole record....the solo section is the same em cmaj amin progression that verdian ends with, is in the middle of white walls building up to the 'this is all we have' part, and the key change at the end of the solo section are the same chords found in ants of the sky at the 6:05 mark. so the whole last 4 minutes of white walls are about bringing back themes with different variations or direct quotes, and that breakdown plays a part in it.. so we didnt just give up and throw that in there. it has a purpose.

Shots at Tool, The Mars Volta, and Between the Buried and Me. I don't know if i like you very much but the review is very well written and I agree with your point somewhat, but still think the bad song writing as u call it is better then most.

Um I love Tool, I just pointed out a quality of theirs, and Mars Volta can be decent too when they aren't fucking around. The music writing of this band is phenomenal it's the songwriting that blows

When will people stop using the word "jazzy" in metal reviews?
Great review otherwise.

Well, go screw you then dumbass. Just because you're too busy listening to 'cut yourself' emo to listen to good music doesn't mean you have to act like a jackass to me.

however many times i put this CD on the only part that sticks in my mind is the polka section, which struck me as totally unnecessary and forced. here's hoping their next record will be alaska ptII

This is the best review so far for this album. Great job, you nailed it perfectly with your outro paragraph. I like this album alot, but its fluidity is not as spectacular as some people make it out to be (hype). Good bands know how to integrate their influences seamlessly; these guys have alot to learn with incorporating an influence without it sounding out of place. Thats my only beef with this album.

So, you want them to regress not only as musicians, but also as songwriters? Okay, I guess...

So, you want them to regress not only as musicians, but also as songwriters? Okay, I guess...

Do you honestly think that by throwing in random out of genre moments that don't transition, blatantly repeating their older material and adding more sweeps equates to improved songwriting?

The only album by this band that's any good from a songwriting perspective is their self-titled.

Some of the genre changes are amusing even if they don't make much sense from a musical perspective. I actually really like this ha :]

Regardless, acting as though playing something closer to their older material would be regression is sheer idiocy, what with how much they've already regressed as songwriters.

I don't see how they're regressed as songwriters.

The members of this band are excellent songwriters. Its the tolerance for songwriting that the listener has that determines if its "good" or "bad," to them atleast. For someone as myself that really enjoys this kind of music, its very good songwriting. In the end, its all relative.
