i dig the dated sound, the sort of eery, low-quality beats. it all has like a really delicate, refreshing effect on me.

i do love the way he employs reverb. "xtal" and "tha" kill

I don't consider this true ambient as well for the same reason. It isn't bad, but the beats keep it from being great ambient, and the beats aren't strong enough to be really memorable. It was a pretty good listen to me, though.
I'm not as pro about electronic as some users on here, but from what I've been listening to recently:
Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht: This shit here is mind blowing. This is my favorite so far. This music will go right into your mind, and then right into your body.
Tangerine Dream - Phaedre: This is really damn good. This album set the bar for ambient I think, and to some it has not been beat.
Kraftwerk - Autobahn: this might be their most instrumental album. Autobahn itself is an amazing track, but the other tracks are awesome and what I consider more ambient.
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene: another great one.

If you think this is superb, then Klaus Schulze is about to blow the top of your head off. I'd wear a helmet. You might want to strap yourself down, or lay down comfortably as well. Just remember to breathe, and remind yourself - this is just music....right?

just close your eyes and imagine you're playing one of those shitty old fps games where the framerate
is super bad and everything is shaped like a block and the only colors are white and off-white

i just bought jerome froese's 'C8 H10 N4 O2' and that is a rather incredible track.
tangerine dream is more mobile ambient if that makes sense but i absolutely love both td and rdj, even though i feel like rdj isn't for everyone

I can agree with this to an extent, but I personally think it's the beats themselves that really drive this album. Aphex is a man who concerns himself with what things might sound like when they're turned inside out and ripped into shreds. I don't think more minimal musings are his true calling, and I think that the beats are a way for him to experiment while still falling within the realms of ambient

Since you 5 this Deviant, I'll give it another spin sometime.
Also Brian Eno and Steve Roach have some great ambient that's more soothing. Their stuff kind of puts me to sleep but if you like that kind of ambient I'd definitely check them out.
