This band is the most unique band I've heard. They are also one of the best bands I've heard. They mix the gutteral, uncomprehensive vocals of Cryptopsy, with some of the most brutal sounds ever, and mix it with these melodic interludes that wouldn't be out of place in an Elton John record. And the way they mix it is excellent as well - they will go from a growl and some blasts to a soft melodic thing with keyboards and clean guitars. The vocalist, with his crushingly heavy growls, has a really nice clean voice as well, and his spoken word bits are almost spooky, but great still the same. The best way to describe this band is a brutal Opeth.
Talking about drummers, this particular drummer, Tomas Corn, is a freak. He has to be heard to be believed. Think of Necrophagist, with a real drummer, and you probably have Tomas Corn. In my opinion, he is better than Flo Mournier. He is a human drum machine. His left hand technique is incredible. His double kicks are lightning fast. He adds so much to the music, adding in fills that no drummer can dream of doing, tom rolls, extra snare hits, he has it all. There is no possible way that the drums could have been better on this album. Guitars are amazing too: two different guitars, with different tones, doing different things! It's amazing I know, and it sounds excellent. The occasional keyboards are excellent too, it's used to perfection.
The musicianship is great, too. Songs rarely stay in 4/4 for longer than 4 bars, without there being a little 2/4 bar with a drum fill, or just an extra beat somewhere, or something. It isn't pretentious, like Spiral Architect or something, you can still follow it easily, nod your head to it etc. and it doesn't get boring. A testament to their great song writing. The lyrics, unlike about 95% of death metal bands, aren't about gore and death, rather they discuss subjects like redemption, longing and sadness. The lyrics are wonderful, I suggest you read them (you can't really understand them)
Recommended songs: The opening track, Land Where Sympathy is Air is the finest track on the record, by far. Not to say the other tracks aren't good, they all are, but this one just stands so much taller than the rest. One of the best songs I've ever heard. Sadness and Strength is one of the longer songs, and my 2nd favourite. Both songs are kind of similar, they both use that Arabic type tone (found at the start of Land Where Sympathy is Air), both have spoken word bits (the one at about 6:00 in Sadness and Strength is the best one on the CD) and both basically kick tremendous amounts of a ss.
Rating: 5/5. Probably my favourite death metal CD. It has something for every metal fan in general. I highly suggest checking out some stuff, preferably the recommended songs. There isn't a bad moment in the whole CD.

unimaginably good album. I haven't even listened to the last track yet though. It's long.
5/5
| | | Great job, wasn't expecting a review of this. This album is indeed awesome; incredibly varied, and every bit of it pulled off very well. Things get called unique far too often, but I think Elvenefris may be something actually deserving of it.
The only person I know who plays in the band is the drummer, Tomas Corn, unfortunately.
The rest of the band were;
Ptoe - guitar, vocals
Andy Maresh - bass
Ondra Martinek - guitar
But did you know they're all gone? From the Elvenefris lineup, only Thomas Corn remains. I wonder if the album released as Lykathé will live up to Elvenefris' standards.
As for Corn being better than Flo..I'm not so sure. Especially considering the recent reports from Cryptopsy that Flo has improved upon his previous level of skill - something about "double blast beats". He is a great drummer though, and I think the performance here at least matches that on None So Vile, if not actually outdoing it.
| | | That is such an amazing album, i wish i could find out more about the band but their so **** mysterious.
Awesome review man
| | | I'm been meaning to check out this band for ages.

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure if they were in the band or not, because of all the changing members... and what sort of name is Ptoe anyway? And I can't wait for the new Cryptopsy either, I've only heard Worm Cryptopsy (well, I've heard bits and pieces of Disalvo, but what's Cryptopsy without the Worm?) and I am eager to see how much Flo has improved.
| | | I ****ing love this album!
I love A Step Closer and On the way Home
But I've heard that their new stuff sucks, something about female vocals and bad synths...
| | | man :upset:
Where did you hear this?
| | | I saw this review when it was still new and I didn't like death metal yet. Now I'm liking "Land Where Sympathy is Air" a lot more, I'll definitely check out this album.
| | | *bump*
Bartender, I've edited all the symbols out, fixed the album cover and the lineup, can you edit the title for me?
| | | Yep, got them. I wonder why the upgrade affected all of your reviews so badly.
| | | looks awesome, I should check them out.
| | | It is time. I am stealing some more music.

| | | Wow, that's a splendid review of that Lykathea Aflame CD!! Nice work, it captures pretty much how I feel about this monumentous release.
I, too, have been trying to find out more about this "mysterious" band. Well, after some work; sadly, the findings are mixed:
1) Lykathea Aflame have indeed been renamed to "Lykathé" (http://www.lykathe.com) but the band has been rather inactive over past 2years+ (I use the fact that there is such a lack of info about them as evidence of that!).
2) The "band" is now down to just a one-man project of Petr Tomanek (Ptoe); he cooperates with some external musicians and Tom Corn may be there (perhaps) as a session studio drummer.
3) Now, for fans of their drummer (as I invariably am), he is now collaborating with the following:
DESPISE ( http://despise/webpark.cz ) - brutal death grind in US vein
SOLFERNUS ( http://www.solfernus.tk ) - fast black metal
(In the above bands, he has not played on any of their releases so far, both have used drum-machines in the past)
SINNOCENCE (no site yet) - new band of Lykathé ex-members Martin Corn-bass, Václav Zahradník (keyboards), Tom Corn-drums, Kristina-vocals, Michal Rákosník-guitars (ex-Alienation Mental). They play rock music with classical influences, nothing brutal...
For the record, I believe that Mr Corn has surpassed his own "mentor", Mr Mounier...
N.B. First post here.
