The fact catch 33 has electronic drums doesn’t matter that much honestly bc Haake still had a hand in programming them, and it almost adds to the mechanical /experimental appeal of the album. They are the best electronic drums you’ll ever hear in metal more or less. Anyone who’s given catch 33 some time knows it has some of meshuggahs best ideas in their whole catalogue

its definitely different to later meshuggah but its the fact that you can hear their sound developing in the raw and you get flashes of what's to come which is so cool. and you can feel the huge amount of effort they were putting into songwriting and performing it, like they were hungry to make their mark on metal. plus it just has this amazing old-timey thrashy jungle-y sort of feel. also future breed and soul burn.. like come on

i feel like people are used to the massively heavy mechanical sounds of later meshuggah and look backwards comparing DEI to that. but its kind of myopic to make that comparison, considering nobody had ever carved out this type of metal before meshuggah. And honestly like if you listen through the more modern guitar tones and production of the later albums, the songwriting and musicianship on DEI and Chaosphere is arguably even better than on later albums - because meshuggah had more to prove at the start of their career. definitely better than the most recent three. just look at the ratings

Koloss has so many bangers thoughhhhh. First 4 tracks and Demiurge are insane. Behind the Sun really underrated.
Need to jam this a bit more as this is so different from Meshuggah in the last 20 years that I seldom think to jam it
