The opening riff of Fault and Fracture is still probably my favorite metal riff of all time. I just get the urge to flail around as wildly as I can whenever it comes on

i think my biggest issue with this band's pre-2009 stuff, and mainly this album, is the way they record their guitars. They're just not strong enough in the mix to go along with the intensity of everything else, I guess. Vocals of bannon never bothered me.

Recent albums don't have this issue as much but still.

I pretty much completely disagree with that, I think they’re perfect as is. Not as thick as they would become later but the more thin and trebly tone is suitable for the more mathy and intricate style they played then. I feel like that’s the reason the new one has the guitars sounding a bit more thin too, the tracks have more mathy and noodly guitar parts that benefit from a thinner and more clear tone.

Sick dig btw Ponton, Beecher is badass

Can't agree with you there. A bump in guitar volume/distortion wouldn't really take away from the guitar noodling they play, mathy or whatever. Other bands do it, now and then. Just imo, this would sound better if the guitars weren't so held back.

And thanks, yeah Beecher kind of nail what I wish I could hear from this production wise.

This may or may not scratch the itch but have you heard Jane Live? Performance is almost dead on but the production is much beefier and more akin to their recent stuff so you may enjoy it more

And y’know I’ve been listening to Jane Doe for so long that I can’t imagine it another way so I might just be biased. That being said Jane Live is an amazing current interpretation

The funny thing is... Ballou did the production for both of their full lengths.

I also second that recommendation on Jane Live. I adore this record but have always felt it was in need of a remaster and Jane Live is the closest thing to a remaster I will probably ever have.
