Gothic atmosphere is impeccable on this, rly strong songwriting throughout but it holds up equally well as a v i b e s record. Vocals coming in and out of focus serves the alb as a whole, part of the charm here is that it's the first record they made that integrated Anneke into the band lineup + writing process properly, miles better than the overemphasised session vocalist role she played on Mandylion

Bonus disc with the Dead Can Dance + Slowdive covers is kinda mandatory too

Wonderful album agreed. You can certainly hear the difference in how well Anneke fits in between Mandylion and this one.

That t/t pops up in my head at all times.

would be a 4.5 but I'm too annoyed by some of the mixing seriously WHY is Anneke so low on the first song

I have never really noticed this to be honest, I'll make sure to pay some attention to it next time I hear this.

How to Measure is an impressive early fave, it took me a while to digest that one. Great choice. I do love Home as well. Such a consistent band.

Souvenirs/Planet/this/Home are most defs the top 4, and that's the only Gathering take I don't think I'd ever budge from

Planet going so ballsy with the 30 minute track at the end was something really neat. Haven't yet gotten to the post-Anneke work I hope the person that succeeded her is good too.

I’d swap this (2nd) and Planet (3rd), assuming they were in order… but that’s my top 4 too now Johnny

Check If_Then_Else for sure if you love Souvenirs, then go forwards. Their stuff up to here is gothic/doom metal and has a different vibe, and then Planet is a cute cosmic big bang thing nestled in between two otherwise distinct halves of the discog

The lesson here is that gothic doom is v cool but trip-hop influences can elevate everything ever made

And only check Almost a Dance if you are a big fan and want to see their humble origins.
