lol. The only thing more "imaginative" about any RK release are the lyrics.

Well, obviously, if you want to compare Relient K to Radiohead or Godspeed You! Black Emperor, it's not imaginative in that sense. Two Lefts and (particularly) mmhmm were both rather adventurous as far as pop-punk goes, though.

I must say that 'Five Score . . " is easily the best Relient K CD to date, barely edging 'Mmhmm' as their peak, and here's why:

Although the summary knocks the CD's positive tone & 'happy all the time' sound, I think that it is off-base. Up to this point, it seemed like every CD Relient K had put out was negative when it came to the topic of girls or relationships, and one came away thinking that while overall the band had a positive message, it sure didn't have anything positive to say about relationships. I do belive that the band has matured on this album, and while the tone does border on being almost unrealistically happy, it is a fresh break from all the negative 'life sucks & I'm mad as hell' tone that seems to be so prevalent in today's music.

While many here have bashed "I Need You", I think it is one of the best tunes on the CD, pointing to the fact that despite all of the singer's efforts to fill the void in his life, he finds himself desperately calling out to God for help. I'm not sure that many on this board understand the various levels of many of these songs that RK has presented.

I think that this is a very creative CD, a maturation from the schizophrenic (at times) sound of "Mmhmm". I believe that RK has matured in their message and their focus on God, and that it shines through on this effort. While May The Horse Be With You, Mood Rings, College Kids, Thunder Cats and other select previous songs were funny, witty offerings, in the end they were pretty much just fluff, especially in the spiritual sense.

Personally, I think it is the greater spiritual emphasis that has turned the casual fan to eschew "Five Score . . . ", and that is okay, because each one of us has to deal with that reality (or choose not to). Relient K has taken a bold step with this album by emphasizing their faith in a much greater way than any album save their first one, and their music and harmony continues to grow & show why they are one of the best bands out there.

you do know "the spiritual sense" is a vague and meaningless bullshit term

Trav, I think you're putting too much emphasis on the "message" of the disc and not the actual music itself. The fact that the album has such a positive tone is not the problem in and of itself; that it's done mostly in a clichéd and frankly boring manner is.

OK ROOFI -- I will give you that

I think that musically, this album is very very good, but I will agree with the cliche' lyrics. But I still think it is a great CD

I agree the lyrics are not good enough to be considered as a "good album" musically it goes boring in some songs. I give a 2.5

Yeah, good review, but I have to disagree. Gaving listened to their past efforts and then moving into this, their (or his) music has matured as well, and Deathbed is proof.

It's good to see a different side of Matt. Why expect the same from Relient K every time? Let them change, I say. Their next album should be even more interesting.

I was initially dissappointed by this CD, considering it wasn't as hard rocking or exciting as Mhmm, but after actually listening to it I started to appreciate this album. Yes, it is kind of cliche and contrived at times, but there are many many great moments too. Especially "Devastation and Reform" and "Deathbed" those both were pretty creative songs. Overall I'd say it's a 3.5 out of 5.

I think im gonna write a counter review against this-its an excellent review and yea you bring up your points well. But I see this album as another progression/sound for relient k. I mean yea they do sound like a lot of mainstream bands now but their lyrics/catchyness makes it work in their favor.

I have always admired Relient K. I've never really been able to put my finger on it, but there is just something I absolutely love about the band. This album is probably my favorite by them. I loved MmHmm a lot, but this album really grabbed my attention. I loved the Beach Boy influenced harmonies and the heart wrenching finale "Deathbed". Call me crazy, but I just love the band. It is pretty weird, seeing that my music taste is heavily entrenched in Metal, but I still continue to admire Relient K.

Don't forget the Sloop John B cover as a bonus track.

This definitely needs a positive review - it's the only RK album besides Mmmhmmm that I still listen to.

Wasn't too impressed with this cd.

I went to a concert in which they were performing and they played The Office theme song and The Subway Five Dollar Foot long jingle. They did a really good job on The Office theme song.

Lol, Relient K used to be my favorite band, five score and seven years ago. Jk.

But seriously, I abhor this album, I am ashamed to own it really... They were pretty dang good, listened to them as I was a frustrated little 14 year old. But, then this came out, and then I found Brand New. Then, I found Rosetta. Then, I found Explosions In The Sky. Now, I haven't listened to Relient K for about a year or two.

I really wish this could be as good as mmhmm. It's VERY well produced and catchy, but it lacks the soul. Deathbed and Bite My Tongue are the only things that bring this up to a 4 for me. :/
