Solid album. Decent songwriting and excellent production. I like it, even though it seems maybe a little hurried.

The first album with Lowe is really good, but falls a little bit into obscurity. Robert's singing is different compared to Messiah's operatic vocals, and the older members know that. So they try to adapt their songwriting and the riffs into Lowe's singing. The result is not bad, but at some points you don't feel like you are listening to Candlemass. Another problem is that the songs doesn't sound like doom metal. Nevertheless KOTGI has it's moments and the best tracks are: emperor of the void, destroyer and embracing the styx.

Bumped this to a 4/5 (from a 3.5).

Lowe has done an excellent job on vocals, he is better than Messiah in Candlemass imo.

The sound of the guitars is devastating and a tremendous improvement with reference to the guitar sound of classics, i.e. Tales of Creation, Nightfall and Ancient Dreams.

Listen to this with full volume, only then its true value is revealed.

Edit:

"Embracing The Styx" is like Slayer playing doom metal with Lowe on vocals, perhaps the best song of the album.

Another great modern album from Candlemass, although there is more melody this time than on the band's self-titled effort. There are still dark forces at work here however...

Still solid guitar work and vocal melodies to be found for sure, but theres nothing here that I care too much about within the context of the rest of their work. That being said, this was still a very pleasant listen and I cant really think of a necessarily poor moment in the album, just nothing that blew me away either

IM THE EMPEROR OF THE VOOOOOOOIIIIID [2]

Great album. It's a difficult thing to fill in a for a band's singer, it's still more difficult for such a charismatic character as Marcolin was. Be or not a fan of Rob, he does a great job, and the album has very nice riffs

Pretty much agree with you Symbolic. I listen to this far less than other albums by the band but when I do, they are all enjoyable tunes.

I think this is the best candlemass album outside of the messiah era. Embracing the Styx is amazing.
