Does anyone else here like Celestial the most?
I really love the intensity, emotion, and density of the music.
I think Pelican makes better ambient albums, but Isis owns when they're at their heaviest.

I might even call this the best metal album I've heard, without getting too deep into all the genre girly-fights that spring up in metal so often.
The musicianship is equal if not better than on Oceanic, and the album flows really well as a whole, from the first minute of the first track you can tell it is a massive record.
The only downside I can see is that you really need to see aside a whole hour to listen to it clear through, worth it though. If you didn't like some of Isis' early efforts because you thought there was too much emphasis on straight out riffing then you can appreciate much more the song-writing on this disc; there is a lot more dynamic variety, layering, and clever use of time signatures that make it a lot more interesting overall than some of their more uniform releases.
As in interesting side note, Aaron has finally gotten around to putting the lyrics to it up on the their SGNL05.com homepage, good times.

I love this album
I could honestly listen to it straight through 5 or 6 times before I felt the need to switch it out.
Each song is just great. So great in fact that my band likes to jam Isis and I think we are actually going to write a song like this because we all listen to it non stop. It's cool how Isis has a slightly different style from album to album. This is my favorite. It is really emotive but also nicely self contained. It's thinking music. It can really pull you in one direction mentally and help yank out ideas you might not otherwise come up with.

This album blew me away when I first heard it around a year ago. It's still doing that today. Classic.

This is my first journey into Isis. I went to the cd store to get Oceanic, and this was all they had. I'd always heard how great Oceanic was, but WOW...Panopticon is freakin good. Best cd I've bought in a while. I love how each song has like 10 different parts, and how there's only like 1 or 2 short singing parts. The album is really geared to the driving guitars, and i like that a lot. I'm still going to look for Oceanic though...how does it compare to this?

I'm considering rating this album as a classic; the dynamics, progression, texture, and overall sound is just mindblowing. This album is perfect except for Altered Course, which is very mediocre compared to the rest of the album.

the bass and guitar riff near the beginning of Wills Desolve is probably the sickest thing ever produced from a musical insturment and they make it even better by having 2 insturments doing it. put on head phones and you will be amazed.

Post Metal kind of irks me, because it seems like they're just raping the good name of post. I already like post rock, post punk, and maybe even post hardcore. Post metal seems redudant and narrowing. Post metal wouldn't sound like Isis. Post metal only seems right because you're using the word "post" which makes me think of Mogwai and Sigur Ros, and metal, because it's harder than rock, which Isis are. But it just doesn't fit.
I prefer "sludge". Some of you might object to that, but it's like grunge, I guess. Plus that's what I visualize whenever I listen to Isis' first album, Celestial. It doesn't fit so much now...
Hmm...

I disagree, I believe it's "post" because of it's texture, ambience, and structure. And how could you call this album "sludge" if "Celestial" is perfectly described as being "sludge metal"? It just doesn't make any sense, because this album sounds nothing like Celestial.

It's definitely one of my favorites on the album... which says a lot because 6/7 of these songs are incredible. Altered Course is definitely the weakest link, but is still good. This Message Edited On 08.16.06

I think this is really overrated, but it is still excellent. The guy's voice is really annoying at some points. 4/5

Never mind about the 4, i think this deserves the 4.5. Everything is literally perfect besides the vocals and being kind of repetative.
