This interests me. Would this be a good album to pick up as my first Iron and Wine?

I'd recommend the Woman King EP first. It's an EP, but is fine, fine. A good place to familiarize yourself, then I recommend getting this.

I think it would be a good intro, either this or Our Endless Numbered Days.

I adore this album and basically love every song. I could see this creeping up to the 4.5-5 range with more and more listens, although I have listened to it a ton. I still only have this and the Woman King EP from Mr. Beam =(, blast..

So this is old news, but a lot of people missed it last time around. Sam is offering a free download of the demo versions of songs from this record on his website. Some of them sound a whole lot more effective stripped down (Lovesong of the Buzzard, Resurrection Fern), whilst some suffer without the additional instrumentation (Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car). Either way, all of them are beautiful, and it's really interesting to see how he built upon the bare bones to create the versions that we have here on the finished album.

the acoustic versions of the new songs really shine; i hope his full band approach on the upcoming record wasn't a mistake.

The instrumentation on here deserves its superb rating, but I get lost in his lyricism.

this guy has written some really good songs but overall I think he's pretty overrated.
