"It came out on the same year as Panopticon and it’s so dumb to read other people saying they were copying Isis"

oh yeah fr - when i said unimaginative, i meant the places they've gone with their own sound (post-SATH anyway), not where they got it from. Vertikal is ig an exception to there and i wish i fw'd with it end to end more. tbh i still have a lot of time for CoL in general and will happily jam the highlights of EK thru Raging River, but the thought of hearing any of those releases in its entirety get me far less hyped than the thought of any given Isis or heyday Neurosis album if that figures

also jammed this boi this morning and damn, most of it as solid as ever but I think Hym (previously one of the major ehs that held it back along with the Other) has finally hit me right. this can have a small bump, think it's every bit as good as Panop and WR and idk if i could pick a fav ISIS at this point

‘the thought of hearing any of those releases in its entirety get me far less hyped than the thought of any given Isis or heyday Neurosis album if that figures‘

So you’re comparing CoL’s weakest era (reading between the lines here, this is your opinion) to Neurosis’s ‘heyday’ and Isis, a band who as great as they were stopped releasing albums in 2009. Hardly seems fair. CoL have the burden of longevity now, so comparing what they’re still doing to classics of the past seems odd. Isis have 5 x LPs total. Neurosis have a ridiculous body of work, but aren’t anywhere near as prolific (or as good) in recent times, in fact they’re most probably done.

The SATH / Salvation era holds up to any of the other classics and is a much more logical comparison point. Plus, you’re already praising The Beyond.

CoL's peak comes short of this or peak neurosis imo (which lasted like 5 or 6 albums, insanely)

Also longevity isn't really a burden. Expanding your body of work is pretty much a net positive critically unless you're releasing utter shit, which CoL isn't.

Don't get me wrong I love CoL but if they, Neurosis and ISIS are the "big three of post-metal" (😒😒😒), both Neurosis and ISIS seem more historically significant influence-wise and their best material pretty handily outclasses CoL's best. But I guess take the influence bit with a grain of salt cuz I don't know much about the genre outside of these three.

That’s fair ford, I wasn’t critiquing the opinion in general terms, more in the way Johnny framed it (the comparison of separate eras didn’t seem fair). Why compare what CoL has done lately to Neurosis’s peak? Not when CoL’s latter stuff is also barely ever considered their peak either?

Isis having a much smaller discog does give them an advantage in some ways though, so I disagree there.

CoL in general are amazing. I dont really have anything bad to say about them it just so happens that Neurosis and ISIS are probably 2 of my top 10 favorite bands of all time and CoL is just my unlucky third fav pm band

I love Cult of Luna but I definitely also find them a lot more sterile than grimy Neurosis or organic-sounding Isis. Whether that’s a positive or a negative depends on my mood, but I find myself actively wanting to listen to CoL a lot less than the other two - even though once I put Salvation, SATH, Vertikal or Mariner on, I’m pretty likely to listen to the entire thing.

Come to think of it, I probably get an active urge to relisten to Rosetta more often than CoL.
