i dont really think theyre "underrated" really big picture lol but they have it seems not really been embraced by the current age of music nerds the way the likes of radiohead / the cure / talking heads / etc. think them being arguably more "mainstream" got rid of their cool factor a bit (even tho everybody that actually knows this band knows they were integrity kings)
think people who dont know them can get the wrong idea based off some of the singles too tbh. wrote them off for years expecting every song was gonna be like its the end of the world and orange crush, and look at me now lmao

" they have it seems not really been embraced by the current age of music nerds the way the likes of radiohead / the cure / talking heads / etc"
yeah i think they are in this sense, also i think they are sometimes neglected in conversations of the most influential early alt and they should always be mentioned there
in popular culture though, probably not, even if the avg person's perception of this band is very different than music nerds'. they kind of occupy a weird space in music history

"Sometimes neglected in conversations of the most influential early alt"
Sometimes, but they are usually one of the few bands brought up in my experience.

yesss that performance of Radio Free Europe is so good, amazing way to rock a TV debut.
It's low audio quality but I also really like these performances from the Paradise in Boston: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtXkhuQubmU-Yf3ike8AwSYxc74dE2zSq

Saying that R.E.M. is underrated is a joke, really. They’re get the credit they deserve, internationally as well. At least from those who can see further than Shiny Happy People.

I bought this at a used record store and the case was in rough condition. The vinyl itself seemed to be fine though; Playing it for the first time now and is playing really well!

This is a decent jangle pop record and tightly written, if plenty bland in places. Don't see it becoming a personal go-to for the style, but it does go some way to explain why all the REM fans I've met irl have either been dull-precocious middle-aged the men in the making or legitimate dads. Stipe sounds like an old car tyre, but ig he has a lethargic charm to him

r.e.m. fans are handsome, virile, upright, etc.

Album Rating: 3.5
best thing i can say to that end is that the concept of virile shouldn't even register to this fanbase

Have you not jammed R.E.M. before, Johnny?
Pretty interesting discog, not entirely sure what your likely preferred album might be though.
