its not super bad or anything, just kind of plain and unmemorable especially in comparison to some of the amazing choruses here

These guys are an eternal oversight. I know the “hits” and am actually fairly familiar with AFTP but never rated it. Have heard some of their other albums a handful of times too but they’re one I’ve never gotten around to giving a proper deep dive.

i dont think this album gets enough credit for its influence and/or prescience. to my knowledge theres really nothing else in '82/'83 that sounded quite like this. this doesn't sound like alt-rock in its infancy at all-this sounds like the heyday of the genre except 5-10 years before. dont know how they did it

yeah I've always considered REM the godfathers of alt rock.

Anyone knowledgeable about modern musical history will tell you the blueprints for basically all alt/indie rock are:
This
Surfer Rosa/Doolittle
Treasure
Zen Arcade
Tim
(regrettably) The Queen Is Dead
Throw in a Violent Femmes or a Remain in Light if ur feeling spicy

Hey I like all of those
except doolittle and surfer rosa

def not saying these guys are totally unsung, but their early stuff doesnt get the credit the pixies do w.r.t. genre influence, esp considering they were several years earlier
all of those rule yea

Yeah it's odd how muted their legacy often is beyond gen-X, the stuff they inspired is still super influential but a surprising number of younger indie kids think they're just the losing my religion band
