Typical. The watered down commercial version of their early milestones, became the most popular.

I wouldn't go that far, but Treasure is better than this

I don't think Treasure sounds that different from this tbh. This is more "catchy" but that's about it

Treasure sounds almost nothing like this. Treasure's production value for a start is completely different, gives it almost a post-punk hue, especially the weird programmed drums. The melodies on this one wash more, everything feels a little more uniform like a syrup. The hooks and stuff on this are more "intoxicating" whereas Treasure has this beautiful trapped in time lo-fi situation and is more aggressive when it's catchy and mesmerizing in it's more ambient moments like Otterly or Pandora compared to this.

If anything this sounds most like Blue Bell Knoll but Treasure still feels more closer to Garlands than this imo

Treasure also reminds me of Dead Can Dance, and indeed post punk, whereas this doesn't have those vibes at all.

They're both great of course, but aren't very alike in my opinion.

Agreed, the last time Cocteau Twins had overlap with DCD was Victorialand imo. This if anything has more in common with Slowdive

BBK can't really decide what it wants to be, having one foot in the gothic waters and the other in the brighter, gaze-y sound. I always found it rather incoherent, and there's also some weak tracks in the back half. This is skillful and self-confident at everything it aims at being. It's incredibly superior imo, although I still like most of BKK just fine.

What I said before + the boring production. This one is a watered down version of a sound they had already developed at this point (The shimmering guitars and incomprehensible vocals). The title track is just a rehash of Sugar Hiccup.

Sure it's a slight iteration on their sound but I think it was a regression.

I'd say it's rather the opposite, compared to BBK - they took the crucial step to leave behind the gothic roots and make the new vibes work due to stream-lined, coherent (and strong) songwriting. I also adore this one's production, but that's just preference. It definitely sounds better than their early ones with their overly loud drum computers. The remaster is terrible though, as usual with Cocteau Twins.

Edit: "The title track is just a rehash of Sugar Hiccup."

Eh, I hear the similarities, but "rehash" is not the word I'd use by any means, and Sugar Hiccup is also just way less refined.

I kind of like the obnoxious early drum machine, even on Garlands.

I can see that. It sure is a recognizable part of their early sound. I don't mind it too much most of the time, but sometimes it's just annoying. But I think what this was going for demanded a clear and crisp production, while it obviously wouldn't have worked for Treasure for instance.

I love the t/t here so much, will check whether that applies to that Hiccup track too on my next spin of that album.
