And I take prog to mmean diverting from the normal song structures and experimenting with instruments.

How is that progressive at all? If Dream Theater stick to the same "odd" signatures, they're no longer odd. If their formula is to maintain a high level of technicality, that's not progressive. The mere fact you attribute concrete aspects as "progressive" make me wonder if you truly understand the meaning of the word.

You can change the rating you gave an album? How do you do that? (This is a very noob-ish question, but I'm kinda new, so...)

Go to the little box that has the rating and click the designated rating your heart desires. And you can change your rating in your review by editing it through your profile.

And how can you say Dream Theater is not progressive? Especially with this album, they moved on to their heaviest sound yet, taking a huge step into the metal realm, essentially "progressing" out of their older style. Of all DT albums this one sticks out the most as "out of the ordinary" for them.

By that standard, Papa Roach and Linkin Park are progressive for changing their sound. Progressive means you progress on music in general, not on your previous sound.

By the way, you also seemed to label Dream Theater's whole career-long genre of "progressive metal" as a wrong classification, yet this is the only cd you own of them. Try listening to Scenes From A Memory, one of progressive music's finest albums.

I agree with a lot of points you make in your review, the only difference is I can tolerate long wankery and just let the bands talent envelope me. If you have no tolerance for that, this album will kill you.

Edit (^to your comment^) they do progress on music on this record. They go into true heavy metal while still avoiding any form of a simple song structure (besides As I Am). The songs they write progress greatly, its just a matter of tolerance I say. This Message Edited On 07.15.07

[q]Meh, he complains a lot, and I think a 3 was rather high, and to me a 3 is just average seeing as it's right in between 1 and 5.[/q]

I agree. Those words to describe the ratings should be fixed. I'm tired of people saying "a 3 is supposed to be "good". that's like a D or C, and a D isn't very good.

I still don't know why i like this group so much. they go against everything i believe in music, but i love listening to most of their stuff. their last album was complete trash however.

I say this is a 3. This album is sort of a guilty pleasure for me. I'm academically against it but it's very enjoyable to listen to, at least most of the time (Honor Thy Father isn't very good though).

Although Endless Sacrifice kicks a lot of ass. I'm listening to that right now, it's really good. Of course, Petrucci just shreds for the solo, but it's actually a more emotionally appealing track than something that's just a bunch of technical riffing like Honor Thy Father and Stream of Consciousness.

I really like Dream Theater, but it's a very good review. I see your points in places, but I think Petrucci's solos can be very effective, although sometimes they do seem overblown and just like he's showing off. The drummer is fantastic, and so's the bassist. The singer, in my opinion, is underrated. Sometimes his voice works, sometimes it doesn't. But yeah, as I said, good review, although I kinda disagree.

I have to be in the mood for this album because the songs are so long and chaotic.

Other songs aren't so chaotic. There's lulls in the "wankery".

There is really nothing progressive about Dream Theater. But yeah, just "Metal" sounds so stale, but there is no subgenre this band can lump into, so prog it is. Bad prog though.

Nothing progressive? That's a failure right there. Considering Blackwater Park is your avatar, it should be easy. There's plenty of progressive stuff in DT records.

Sadly, it seems some people don't understand what Progressive Music is. Very poorly written review, also you failed at researching the band because LaBrie didn't even write the lyrics that you criticized.
