‘Haha I used to consider Fireproof their worst track since before Alligator, but it's moderately grown on me over time.‘

Then IAETF came along and provided you with a plethora of other options, right?

The ever-so-slight problem here is that all my fave tracks are in the first half/middle section, leading to an inevitable ‘tailing off’ - perhaps HV has a more balanced quality distribution. Admittedly the first half has Squalor Victoria and Guest Room is up there, which is maybe the only contradiction to that point.

Slow Show, Fake Empire, Brainy, Green Gloves - the awesome foursome.

I agree to an extent, I mean no song here is anything less than amazing imo but my three least favorites are all in the last 5 tracks while my top 5 are all in the first half so it is marginally frontloaded (even if that back half is still among my favorite music ever).

So you agree then, essentially. I’ll just declare this a victory and move on. I realise your unconditional love for this band is unshakeable.

For the record nothing here is outright bad, Squalor may touch upon ‘average’ - but then I don’t want to judge it too harshly due to association. It’s still better than virtually all of IAETF (and maybe a decent chunk of SWB, still can’t get a proper grasp of that one).

Yeah I guess I do agree lol, it's just not a "problem" for me per se - like I see it as more "holy moly the first half is incredible" than "the second half is relatively weaker".

I love Squalor a lot, and agree that "Guest Room" (and also "Ada") are on basically the same level as the opening run. "Racing Like a Pro" is the closest this has to a weak link but even that one has grown on me a lot over time.

‘Racing‘ does stick out as a comparatively weak link to me. Don’t mind me though, I’m mostly just nitpicking.

Bumped my rating - finally admitting that this is every bit as good as any of Alligator or the three albums after this, and may be even better than one or two of them. This has been my go-to National album in recent months.

Last album was pretty lame, the 5 before that are all awesome. So that’s a pretty fucking big win in my book.
