Something different? She saw Avril, got Avril's team and told them to turn her into Avril.

Becoming a pathetic clone of someone else in a transparent attempt to get rich doesn't really translate as artistic growth to me

I don't begrudge Liz her attempts at mainstream success, but what it resulted in was extremely mediocre. I don't think it's without merit or charm (Why Can't I is actually really endearing) but in the long run it definitely did more harm to her career.

I just don't think it sounds like the same person made that record - like I cannot see ANY common thread AT ALL. It's pathetic lyrically, nothing on that album is endearing to me. Disclosure, I don't like the Avril sound.
To be fair, Liz sold 400000 copies of that album, so I guess someone liked it.

I don't like that album or Avril either but I think pathetic is a bit strong, and I don't think it's too far a cry from some of the songs on Whip Smart and Whitechocolatespaceegg in terms of songwriting. Give some of the hookier songs on those albums the Matrix production treatment and I think they'd fit in pretty well on her self titled.

@fogza: Yeah, I might be a bit biased. Let Go is still one of my favorite early 2000s pop albums, so I’m usually all for anything in that vein

But I’m also approaching this as someone who doesn’t think this album is the genre-defining classic it’s often heralded as

Maybe this is a victim of the Seinfeld effect. I still think it sounds leagues above what her contemporaries were doing at the time and it's a super influential album.

It’s a weird situation for me, because I love a ton of female indie singer-songwriters who have all made their mark on music. But this just sounds like another alternative rock record... granted it’s a great one, but it sounds kinda dated and similar to a lot of other music being made at the time. To me, at least

I dunno, I think this is a cut above the rest, and still holds up. The lyrics are great, I love the concept of it as an reply to Exile on Main St. It sounds like a slightly dirty low fi rock record, and it's not angsty in the same way as lots of 90's stuff was - more straight ahead and pragmatic.

I guess I’m referring to all the 5/5s and insane accolades more than anything else. As I said, the album’s incredibly solid... but Rolling Stone putting it at #56 in their best albums of all time is fucking ridiculous to me

Lol, I would guess every user on this site would look at the Rolling Stone list of anything and go "pfffft" at any number of records on it

Ok, I had a flip through it - I stand by it that the lyrics are a drop in quality across the board, but there are a few songs that share the same DNA with older material music wise, I can't deny it. It's odd that you brought up 'Why can't I' though, because I think that's one of the worst songs.

I'm just glad that Liz Phair is getting some actual discussion this site.

I never noticed that but yeah this has 200 ratings and 4 pages of discussion, like wtf

Not to mention that this is the only Liz Phair album that has a review, which is kinda wild.

Yeah, and it's him like doing disclaimers. We've got a contributor on this thread, maybe Divergent should give the contentious self-titled a review.
