The lyrics here are definitely the worst out of any Katatonia album (given the year it came out, I have to imagine it was because they wanted to take some cues from nu metal in that department), but I still enjoy the music and atmosphere a lot

i was a huge katatonia stan when this came out and they would list the stuff they were listening to on their site and during albums like last fair deal gone down it was stuff like songs: ohia. during this album? korn. it shows.

also the music itself has a lot of nu metal elements, the guitars were seriously dumbed down. hard to believe anders played these riffs.

someone a couple years ago said this was the last awesome katatonia album. this album isn't awesome, but it is the last decent katatonia album. last fair deal gone down is the last awesome katatonia album.

Definitely can't agree there, since I love the more proggy and abstract stuff they're doing these days. If anything, I prefer that to their more alternative 2000s era personally. Still, Last Fair Deal is one of my two favorite Katatonia albums overall, so there's that

Call me Craig 'cause I'm on that list
Drink dick like Sierra Mist
If you're down let me take that piss
So tight, taking that fist
Roaches in my bag
Roaches in my suitcase
Roaches in my hair
Dickpig riding like pound cake
Glitter on my dick
Glitter on my dick
Glitter on my dick, dick
Glitter on my dick, dick
Glitter on my dick, dick
Glitter on my dick, dick
Glitter on my dick, dick
Glitter on my dick, dick
Ah-ah-oh-oh

i'd go with brave murder day and dance of the december souls as my favorite katatonia records. their dark metal sound was truly special and super influential.

"someone a couple years ago said this was the last awesome katatonia album."

I think this is the album that finally allowed them to come up with smth that they could call their own, from here onwards it's all great.

except that everything before viva emptiness was more original than anything after. a lot of the more prog stuff they did later on just sounds like opeth-lite

I don't hear the similarities quetzal. I am sure you've seen that 2 hour doc where they mention they were obviously fond of Opeth in the beginning and after they were slowly drawn to Fields of the Nephilim and all that gothic stuff. That mix ended up being the seed that imo culminated with Night is the New Day.

Of course if you want to call it Opeth-lite, that's your take and I'll respect it ;)

nah i actually gave up on katatonia a while back and just give their albums a courtesy listen these days. far cry from the days when i would listen to tonight's decision on repeat. haven't watched a documentary or really cared about them at all in a long time. i still listen to the stuff jonas and anders made decades ago but they just lost me.

I wouldn't really compare Katatonia to Opeth in the first place. I mean yeah, they're both melancholic rock/metal, but that's where the similarities end for me. I'd actually consider their 2000s work to be closer to Porcupine Tree's alt metal-oriented albums from the same era, which can be a good or bad thing depending on which specific PT songs we're talking about
