Damn. Well this grew on me quite a bit. Would now rank it above Good News (which I still really like). From what I can tell, this one is generally underrated by the fan base imo. March Into the Sea, Fire It Up and Florida are great, while Spitting Venom and Little Motel tank among their best songs.

Ayyyy congrats on seeing the light. "Spitting Venom" and "Parting of the Sensory" are top 10 Modest Mouse as far as I'm concerned, with "Missed the Boat" and "March into the Sea" probably landing in the top 20

Yeah Parting of the Sensory is my third favorite. Spitting Venom, then Little Motel, Parting of the Sensory, March Into the Sea, then I’m not sure after that. Maybe Fire It Up or People Are Places.

Spitting Venom is the best of the best MM songs, alongside stuff like Talking Shit, Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine, Cowboy Dan, Trailer Trash, The Stars Are Projectors, The World at Large etc.

Spitting venom is cool the first 5 or so listens but it’s just the same four chords for like 8 minutes

Oh wait I was thinking of parting of the sensory but still spitting venom doesn’t do much for me anymore

I love every part of Spitting Venom, first half and second half. Been listening to it repeatedly for days and it’s not getting old. Possibly makes my top 5 MM — if not top 5, definitely top 10. And as you all know, there is some fierce competition for that top 10.

Little Motel may be slightly cheesy, but damned if it isn’t becoming one of my favorite MM songs. Just powerful and emotional. Probably helps that i watches the video, which was fucking heart wrenching.

Hmmmmmmm, early days for me but nah I don't think so, this is more bloated, and sounds more tryhard in its attempts at poppiness. Less variety here too. Good News also had a few instant classics, this...doesn't

'Less variety here'
I see this as probably their most varied album :/
'Spitting Venom' is a deep cut classic and I really like 'Parting of the Sensory' although many would not agree on that.

Those are two of the better one but a lot of this is...kinda bad
It could grown on me but right now I might rate this as low as a 2

How is this more variety than...literally any of their other albums except maybe Long Drive? It's pretty much all just relatively upbeat, 4 minute poppy rock

It's flirting with middle of the road indie - in 2019 I'd still rather listen to this than anything by The Shins, Spoon, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, etc but I can see Brock being a bit irritating here if you're not in the mood
I do find the musical affectations and segues on 'Good News' more off putting - just something about that album that gets my hackles up for some reason.
This album is happy being a bit basic and I like that, it owns its choices.

Fair enough I guess, I just feel like Good News achieves that thing much better than this does. Plus the bands you mention were all smart enough to keep their albums to 40 minutes or less, if MM wanted to really fit with that crowd they'd take that advice.
