I’ve always thought of grindcore as punk but punk that metalheads like.

Brian Harvey kinda is the secret sauce on classic PxDx, doubt they'll ever go back to this kinda style now that he's retired(?)

grind comes from punk but has evolved to [potentially] incorporate a lot of dm so there's grind bands that have lost their overt typical hardcore influences, and then there are trve punky grind bands. It's still a punk genre tho, despite deathgrind injecting overt metal influences into the genre, and metalcore's move toward a more metallic sound over the last 20-ish years also influencing extreme punk in general.

Metal and punk are conjoined twins and grindcore is the spleen you'll accidentally chop in half if you try to separate em

Brian Harvey is like a unicorn. Entirely unique, inventive and technical drumming style, quit the band shortly after they released their best albums, can’t find videos of him performing live on YouTube. I can’t even find a dang photo of him on google

Not if I use the handle first, Mort! But yeah, I think early grind was reminiscent of ultrafast hardcore punk with growls thrown over top. I don’t think you can call all permutations of grind punk rock, though.

Metal and punk are conjoined twins and grindcore is the spleen
i mean kinda yeah. i was thinking about it today and really grindcore was doing extended blast-beat sections more prominently early on than a lot of dm bands were--especially if you go back to Repulsion as a reference point--which feels like something dm could've actually borrowed more from grindcore?

I see grindcore as crust/anarcho punk married to (very fast) thrash metal

I don’t think I’ll ever come to terms with how good this album is. The evolution of the sound and songwriting from previous releases to this is insane. Absolutely unparalleled musicianship and enormous sound recorded with just 2 instruments and a vocalist. And how jr Hayes vocals sound so inhumanly perfect. I was watching his live sets before this album and before he messed up his vocals and truly inhuman. Hard to believe he also just happens to write the most poetic lyrics in metal
