"i always interpret this as a kind of feminist album in which the woman is portrayed as a victim of a society that values sex and mysoginy and all that"

interesting. how do you come up with that? he certainly idolizes her ("she used to be so right , so right about everything") but i find that all of the lyrics point towards his resentment and bitterness towards her more than anything. trojan whore depicts her as a hardcore drug. the song name intimate slavery alone doesn't sound very good especially with lyrics like "i would show you the view from the floor, but the knees are as far as you go". and he really mostly depicts her as a dirty, mechanistic vessel of sexuality imo

yeah but the whole idea is that the narrator is this depraved psycho who needs to get over it and just leave her alone, and throughout the album there's all these depictions of men making a situation worse like how in the intro it describes two girls violently hurting each other and a guy just watches and jerks off to it instead of like stopping it. and then theres "strangled with a halo" which seem to imply that either the narrator or Jennifer was molested as a child by a male preacher

I've also always interpreted Snuff Film at Eleven as being about unrealistic beauty standards

I think snuff film could be interpreted a bunch of different ways. I think it’s about the hypocrisy of commercialism. The people who claim that they are against certain vices tend to also be the folks who peddle them

Either way, the social commentary, however much is here, is pretty often playing second fiddle to the demented poetic considerations. Lyrics are beautifully written but esoteric and open to enough interpretations that arguing any specific cogent universal point with them is an uphill battle.

That said agree with Kompys that SF@11 is probably the most parsable in that regard

If unrealistic beauty standards are what commercialism advocates, then we’re all right

fingerprints on my eyes
like 10 tiny maps to heaven
or 10 rogue angels torching the house of god
i felt something pressing against my kidneys
maybe a pair of wings
maybe the ghost of a bullet

Agreed. That stretch of records is just monstrous. It's a shame they dropped off a cliff after, IMO
