This album has such a beautifully lonely, fractured, and melancholy atmosphere.

It's almost tragic that this is the only Grizzly Bear album that DOESN'T have a 3.9 average. It's the only one that deserves such an honor

Easily their most emotionally resonant and least pretentious work.

Is this or Yellow House your favorite boney?

Found this for 3 bucks and took a chance on it. I like GB's recent stuff so I'm kind of hoping this is like a raw version of that which will give me some context with regard to the progression of their sound.

Lucky duck, hope you dig it.
P.S. it's their best

Well I'm excited now. Yellow House as okay for me, Shields was better, and Painted Ruins was my favorite. I've been on a bit of a vintage/older record kick lately where I've been collecting underrated debuts. Hopefully this fits the bill.

Uh oh, Painted Ruins was my least favorite. This might be a complete reversal of taste sort of thing. Fingers crossed for a 3.0+ rating at the very least

Oh crap. I do tend to favor the more polished and melodic, but I still have high hopes for this! I'll comment back once I've heard it. I'm certainly not expecting their debut to have the same level of polish/luster as their current stuff..

I'm a fraud to the core and even I know it's their best.

This is their best album, why the 3.3 avg? Slightly prefer this to Painted Ruins, which is catchier but doesn't have the depth or atmosphere that this does.

I'm just more shocked than anything that this has the lowest average in their catalog. Am I missing something? Seems like a massive oversight by a large portion of the user population. This reminds me of an earthier, more grounded In The Attic of the Universe, and anyone who knows how I feel about that Antlers' album knows just how much I'm complimenting this right now. A 4.3 is just the start, I could see this becoming a pretty special album to me. It's not overly catchy but damn if the atmosphere doesn't just bring it.

I think people overlook this because it isn’t really a Grizzly Bear album as it was almost entirely made by Ed Droste alone. Only Yellow House sounds anything remotely like this. Additionally I don’t think this made much of a splash on release whereas Veckatimest was pretty huge.

Can't figure it out for the life of me. I can handle it not having the highest, but the lowest? No way

@Boney: Sure, but at 206 votes you'd still think the average would be better (I hate to sound overly defensive of an album I only heard a couple times, but it floored me both times). Anyhow, if this isn't a real Grizzly Bear album, then I wish Ed Droste would do more solo stuff. Or has he and I've just been missing out? I'm spinning again while commenting and holy god if the strings of Eavesdropping into the hums of Service Bell isn't just otherworldly.
@Sandwich: Yeah that's a travesty. I might have to review this.

Bangin, hope that comes to pass. All this chatter might make me recheck this. Pretty confident I'll keep a 4.0 for this one
