I'm a huge fan of Clive Barker and Cabal/Nightbreed and somehow never caught the reference to it with this album. Nice! If you haven't read Cabal I highly recommend it (and just most Barker books in general tbh)

this used to be my favorite back when I was a teenager. very accessible but still has a bite to it that was very alluring at the time.
i mean it’s still great even if I hold their classic period albums in higher regard.

I consider this the first one that’s a questionable classic. This is where all the hardcore metalheads jumped ship I think. Up to cruelty they were still at the forefront of the underground.
Although that’s just my take, the alternative is still perfectly defensible.

Yeah that's my view also, old fans were definitely already complaining a lot back in 2000. IIRC it was mostly because of Midian's refinied production, Dani fooling around with death metal vox (e.g lord abortion) and that whole Cradle of Fear thing.
Bitter Suites to Succubi didn't do much to appease that either.

It is absolutely defensible, and probably was the general consensus back then agreed. I think that this has changed in hindsight though, so many people would nowadays rate Midian among their best. Time has been kind to it.
