The first paragraph sums up how I feel about this movie perfectly.

Nick, I just now finally realized where your user image came from after having checked out motW after ages of refusing to. I feel enlightened.

This film is absolutely stunning to look at and has absolutely no emotional weight or narrative importance. It seems like the entire film was just a vehicle for the visuals, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However when Aronofsky tries to make some sort of convoluted plot with parallel stories, this film becomes a chore to watch. Pretty much the only film I've ever liked of his was The Wrestler which is a perfect display of american realism.

This soundtrack would be cool though, I think. I'm always hit or miss with all three of the parties involved really.

^nah.

It was definitely very strong technically (acting, camerawork, etc.), but it was also overly bleak to the point where it was heavy handed. The Wrestler was still a pretty dreary film but it was handled with more subtlety. I can understand why people like Requiem so much, it just didn't sit well with me.

I've always felt if you didn't like this movie it's because you didn't understand it

poor choice of words, what I meant was it didn't draw me in to feel empathetic towards the characters other than, 'oh they're life is really bad. Drugs are bad.' Whatever, not going to argue its not a good film, I just didn't particularly like it.

I kind of agree with that. "I've always felt if you didn't like this movie it's because you didn't understand it". But let's talk about how AWESOME the music is.

I've not heard it.... well not outside the film, which renders a completely different experience, so I'm not so sure what to say.

I agree on the soundtrack (awesome), but you really summarized my feelings about the movie and my frustrations on why more people didn't enjoy it. Brilliantly worded, sir.
