Great stuff but literally (minus Assassination and ASDGWIEUIH) every album after this is better.

Agreed, they have many better works, but that's saying something about the mind blowing quality of Ulver's output instead of being degrading to this one imo.

Absolute classic of folky bm. Track 1 is just genius.

I always wonder how album's like this sound to someone from Norway. Part of my enjoyment is the vocals act more as instrumental oohs and aahs and melodies and pronunciation of words w/ the Norwegian tongue give it that forlorn mystical sound to my American ears. But then you read the translated lyrics of Capital I for example:
"Over her head it drips from a branch, drop by drop, like the blood from the body of Jesus Christ"
..and I wonder how or if that changes the feeling of the album. One one hand it makes me thankful that it's in a language I don't know so I can paint my own picture with the music.

it would be gibberish to any norwegian. it's like made up lyrics based off of some archaic form of norwegian (not old norse)

lol weird, it's apparently some sort of old Danish, but you completely overlooked the point of what I was saying regardless of your pedantic comment.

I think about that too DBoy. I'm usually happy if bm lyrics are in a language I don't speak. Wiegedood, a Belgian bm band come to mind. Being Dutch it's just a little too awkward...

correcting you on what language the lyrics are in isn't exactly pedantry

they are incredibly similar languages dude, and to say that Norwegians wouldn't be able to understand the Dano-Norwegian lyrics is probably not even accurate

Dane here, I understand these lyrics fine. E.g. bergtatt is bjergtaget.

Yeah I like this music way more when it's not English or my mother tongue. Most BM lyrics are awkward as hell anyway

listening to metal bands sing in swedish isn't weird in any way for me. does metal in english sound weird to native speakers? probably not.
